Mer-men boys in my room last night

Most of the psychic phenomena, contact with entities, and other “weird stuff” I’ve experienced in my life has been in dreams or on the edge of sleep. I have narcolepsy which has given a scientific/allopathic explanation for the things I’ve seen, heard and felt, but I’d like to think there’s a possibility there’s something more to it.

The latest of these weird dreams was a couple of nights ago, my car alarm had gone off in the depth odf the night and my boyfriend had gone out to check it (we currently live on the edge of a lake in quite well-populated countryside). After he came back in I slipped back into the dream I’d been having beforehand but it went all funny and I woke myself and him up shouting. As I drifted back to sleep, the caravan door opened (in waking life it doesn’t have a lock) and in came three creatures who  like a cross between Oogie Boogie’s boys from A Nightmare Before Christmas and Old Gregg from The Mighty Boosh. They started stealing stuff but left as awoke, again calling out to my boyfriend for help.

Old Gregg’s a much-loved character. I use him when I’m walking to the toilet block, the water tap and the shower room when it’s dark, if I get spooked I say, “oh it’s Old Gregg” and laugh and I’m not scared anymore. Ok, so maybe this sounds like something a little kid would do, but hey, it works so why knock it?

  1. You say “oh it’s only Old Gregg” and then you’re able to laugh?

You’re not scared of Old Gregg?

    You’re one brave girl!

On a lighter note, do you get the same creatures recurring in different dreams at all?

  2. Sure Old Gregg is a scary character too but it is a funny episode and it’s that which dispels my fear. This is the first time I’ve seen the mer-boys in a dream, or any water based being for that matter, have had recurring dreams about water in the past, but that’s usually the sea, being unable to escape the incoming tide, though not drowning (in waking life I’m a confident swimmer).

  3. Your dream about the tide sounds familar, i keep having a similar dream since i was llittle, although in my dream it is either tsunami or waves getting bigger and bigger. I am tryng to escape but my legs feel very heavy. These dreams freak me out. I always wondered what they meant- like yourself i am a good swimmer and i love the sea, so not sure where this fear comes from.

  4. Not entirely decided on how valid dream interpretations are, I think the definitions usually point towards archetypes and symbolic meanings, often ones which we’re not even aware of, and who has decided x means y anyway? Having said that I do find them quite interesting and often useful, so gives us:
    Tidal Wave

To see a tidal wave in your dream represents an overwhelming emotional issue that demands your attention. You may have been keeping your feelings and negative emotions bottled up inside for too long. On a positive note, the tidal wave symbolizes the clearing away of old habits. If you are carried away by the tidal wave, then it means that you are ready to make a brand new start in a new place.

To dream that you can create a tidal wave with your mind is analogous to your ability to control your emotions and keep them in line.

To see or hear the tides in your dream represents a need for emotional and spiritual cleansing. Low tides indicate that you energies are being drained, whereas high tides symbolize high energy. Alternatively, the tides symbolize your emotional ups and downs.

To see the sea in your dream represents your unconscious and the transition between your unconscious and conscious. As with all water symbols, it also represents your emotions. The dream may also be a pun on your understanding and perception of a situation. “I see” or perhaps there is something you need to “see” more clearly. Alternatively, the dream indicates a need to reassure yourself or to offer reassurance to someone. It brings about hope, a new perspective and a positive outlook on life no matter how difficult your current problems may be.
To dream that you are lost at sea suggests that you are drifting around in life without any direction. You are feeling overwhelmed by emotions.

To dream that you are drowning indicates that you are feeling overwhelmed by emotions. Repressed issues may be coming back to haunt you. You may be proceeding too quickly in trying to discover your unconscious thoughts. You should proceed more cautiously and slowly. If you drown to death, then is refers to an emotional rebirth. If your survive the drowning, then it means that a waking relationship or situation will ultimately survive the turmoil.

To see someone drowning in your dream suggests that you are becoming too deeply involved in something that is beyond your control. Alternatively, it represents a sense of loss in your own identity. You are unable to differentiate who you are anymore.

To see a merman in your dream indicates a need to belong and to be part of something. Alternatively, a merman represents some message from your unconscious.

  5. reminds me of the post @lolita made a while back about the selkie folk:

As for dreams of the sea, I’ve often had those about my life. Sometimes I’ve had to crawl down huge cliffs to get to the sea and in others I’ve been walking along coastal paths only to find myself cut off.

In yet others, that I had quite recently but don’t remember much of, I was swimming in the sea and watching a bay all lit up with some bar and music and lots of people partying, so I swam around the cliff to where it was quieter and away from people. I don’t recall actually leaving the sea in that one, perhaps I’m connecting to my selkie/mer-man self!

I haven’t seen the mighty boosh at all, but after watching a clip of ‘Old Greg’ I think I might have to. Reminds me of a time when tripping I cross dressed with colourful tights and at least one person present hallucinated that I was a mermaid…
